Media Trip Notes

We attended a media music video convention set up by a company called Richmix education. We arrive in Brick Lane and was led into a theatre and given a leacture about the history of music videos. In the afternoon session different music directors spoke to us and explained their processes in making their music videos. The morning session consisted of powerpoint timeline showing how music videos have worked their way through history. This is what I learnt:
  • 1930's - This is the period of time in which the idea of music videos came about. This was from experimentation with short film. An example of this is len lye "a colour box". This was when people experimented with a short film without a lot of music and just a short narrative.
  • 1940's- Soundies- These were short musical films that sometimes followed a narrative.

  • 1960's- Scopitones were music videos that involved a longer running narrative.
  • 1960's promo films to showcase albums - one of the most famous bands that used short films and music to promote there song and album is The Beetles.
  • 1970- more artists followed in the footsteps of The Beetles and made short films to the music - "madness"
  • 1981- MTV dedicated music videos. This was the beginning of the famous mtv channel.

  • MTV was initiallly British males beacause women generally didn't make music videos. It has now become the most famous channel for displaying music videos.
  • American music videos were then made and shown to promote different songs. One of there first artists was Maddonna - "open my heart" - first music video on tap
  • Black music was then introduced to the music video world through motown. Michael jackson was one of the most influential black artists that arose from motown music. He explored dance, acting and full narrative in his music videos. One of the most famous music videos of all time "Thriller".
  • Then the Sexual side of things are introduced to pop music. Most famously "50 cent- Candy shop". Music videos became more explicit as sex was becoming more acceptable in society. People would watch it because they knew that they shouldnt be watching it.
  • The budget in music videos rises all the time and more and more expensive videos are being made and new ideas are being created to explore the world of music videos.
  • Americas music has become the most popular music in the world and this is where the most successful music videos have been made. e.g. Beyonce- Single Ladies.
From this media trip I have learnt the history of music videos and how they have developed from plain black and white film with music into full colour music videos. It was interesting to learn about the music videos that used to be around as I had not heard of them so it was interesting for me. I felt that with the more recent music video knowledge I already knew so this gave me confidence in myself and what I already know. Overall I thought the day was sucessful and taught me a few things that I didn't know about music videos.
